Terms of use

Short, because it can be.

Ownership

All original text, photography, diagrams and code on this site are © 2026 Matt King unless stated otherwise. Publication titles, abstracts and figures remain the property of their respective publishers, and are reproduced here under the terms each publisher grants to authors.

What you may do without asking

  • Quote up to a few hundred words with attribution and a link.
  • Link to anything here, from anywhere, including commercially.
  • Cite the publications — the citation and BibTeX buttons exist for that.

What needs a conversation

  • Reproducing an essay in full, in any medium.
  • Translations, including machine translations published under your own name.
  • Using photography commercially or outside editorial coverage.
  • Training a commercial model on the full text of this site.

None of these are hard noes. Ask — the answer is usually yes, and usually within a day.

Automated access

Crawling for search indexing is welcome. Crawling that ignores robots.txt, or that requests pages fast enough to affect availability for anyone else, is not, and will be rate limited or blocked. The RSS feed and JSON feed are the polite way to follow new writing, and the API behind this site is intentionally simple to consume.

Accuracy

The writing here reflects a view at a point in time, and some of it will turn out to be wrong. Nothing on this site is professional, medical, clinical or legal advice. Availability shown on the calendar page is indicative until confirmed by email.

Liability

This site is provided as-is. To the extent permitted by law, no liability is accepted for any loss arising from its use or from reliance on its contents. Nothing here excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
